I'm happy that there's still healthy competition out there, I hope the camera sells well as it will herald good upgrades for all users no matter what their predilection. Nikon has only one problem: their Marketing, they are way too modest. At higher ISOs$(document).ready(function() { $("#icl-5209-1234684027").click(function() { ImageComparisonWidgetLink(5209); }); }) noise performance from the Z5 and D750 drops in comparison to their BSI peers, the Z6 and a7 III (which looks the best). Working in a variable light condition is easy with Nikon Z5. The 24-50 as a compact zoom lens (I mostly shoot 24-50 anyways) was a big reason I wanted this camera, but it's quite disappointing IQ wise. That's the thing - in my opinion they are not minor and DPR was mistaken in giving the Z5 the gold award. ;-) All I know is I’m happy I refunded the X-T4 with 16-80mm and replaced it with the Z5 + 24-200mm. With the release of the budget-friendly Nikon Z5 full-frame camera, we now have a number of different options to choose from in the Nikon mirrorless line-up. So, it won my money. I said months ago that as long it shoots HD video competitive with costlier cameras it'd meet my needs. I agree. It reminds me of people buying cheap printers for $39 and charging $59 for ink refills. They'll get there on the cheaper lenses. I never said it was "great". What about some "native" Nikon AF-S lenses such as 50mm 1.8G or 35 1.8G? But there are many paid job not requiring AF. I'm glad you're admitting that you're a troll. Just wait for the October announcement for the new Z6s/7s. Canon’s EOS RP, for example, is a very different body design compared to both the EOS R and especially the new EOS R6. While there is no size advantage over conventional DSLR lens size wise, you so get high quality EVFs and a larger AF point coverage area. The issue is that with ISO above 200, skin texture in Fuji files degenerate into a slight watercolour effect very fast. Z6 is in a higher category. i thought Canon is the darkside? The A7R II has a broad range of modern AF options, including Eye and Face tracking with 399 on-sensor Phase Detection points. Nikon Z5 review: Image Quality and Low Light Performance Image quality from the Z5 is very good, even if the full-frame sensor isn’t as up-to-date as the one in the Z6. There are a lot youtubers out there who are actually not even a true photographer or videographer, more like a "content creator making click bait titles. Want the latest and greatest from Nikon mirrorless? Alright, here’s what everybody has been concerned about: when the Z5 was announced, sharp-eyed photographers noticed that the 24-megapixel sensor was not “BSI”, that is, it’s not Back-Side Illuminated. They look how people really look. I know, there was even the 300D Firmware Hack from Features of the 10D, but back then, i still prefered my 10D, which i still own today, 17 years later. Video: Unfortunately, the best the sensor can do. On the contrary, more people seem to be in a selling mode. The Z5 will have 1.7x more FL than the equivalent lens on the A7R II. Find out now by reading our in-depth Nikon … Image quality is spectacular. There are a lot of photo/video cameras that have found a role as B-cameras on professional productions or A-camera for amateur and independent productions. Honestly, though? The Techart TZE-01 works for personal photography but I would never take it on a job as a number of focus modes don't work well. If anything, the Z5 and Z6 being nearly identical despite the $600 difference in their original MSRPs, if nothing else, only really highlights just how much BETTER the Z5’s ergonomics are compared to its competition from Canon and Sony! They listed AF stuff under both the "Pros" and "Cons": * Continuous Eye-AF gives ground-breaking hit rate for portrait, candid, event photography. It has a sensor that delivers image quality similar to the Nikon D750 and Z6, but that’s not at all a bad thing since even the D750 sensor was already a benchmark for full-frame image quality, for five years from its release 7 years ago. I agree that I would not use the Techart on a paid job requiring AF. The word is out that Canon and Sony are very very hungry wanting your business. If you shoot video, then there are indeed obvious drawbacks- the Z5’s 4K video is cropped to approximately a DX portion of the sensor, so although the video files have great detail and dynamic range, they’ll require a whole different approach when you need to shoot at a wider focal length. It also features nearly 150 wonderful images from past Olympics games. It was US $999 which was a great value. You can work around this by grabbing an ultra-wide lens such as the Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S, which will give you the equivalent of maybe a 21mm or 22mm angle of view, but for truly serious video shooters, it’s a pretty frustrating compromise to make. I was interested in the small size. The Z6 and D780 share a more advanced 24MP BSI sensor. Okay, let’s cut right to the chase: The Nikon Z5 is very, very similar in every way to the Nikon Z6, physically speaking. To get right to the verdict: the Z5’s autofocus is great! Looks like Sony did and still do the biased review over the years from various youtube channels, that is why this kind of statement is coming from you. You can't compare Cooper (Fuji) to Landcruiser (Z6). But the RP is not a competitor that happens to be 400-500 bucks less. Nikon, unfortunately, is staying tight-lipped about user sensor cleaning and recommending that a dirty sensor be returned to them for cleaning. The 14-24mm f2.8 and 24-70mm f2.8 are the lighest, most compact and highest quality on the market. Compelling camera. And, I thought one of the great advantages of mirrorless was the great video quality. And again, here are some side-by-side comparisons to make it easier to analyze the results: Here’s the bottom line: in terms of both image detail VS noise levels, and dynamic range at both low and high ISOs, the Nikon Z5 performs amazingly well. Especially Europe with huge 2nd waves.. F mount 70-200mm VR II is available second-hand in great condition at $1000/€1000. I hope that DPR does some investigating. The new Z series cameras do look intriguing, but I'm having no trouble wheedling clinically sharp details out of my Fuji when I want them. Pretty much all youtubers? Thanks for the heads up about run of the mill image quality from the 24-50mm. :)). The shutter of the A7R II is also good for 500.000 actuations. So it’s only about the lenses lacking an equivalent in either Z or F mount and the main ones end up being very compact Voigtlander MF lenses. But, quite honestly, it’s going to be pretty boilerplate–the older cameras are worse, the newest cameras, across the board, are great. For many photographers, these are the two biggest priorities, and for pretty much all photographers they are very high on the list, along with things like sheer speed and dependable build quality. Simply put, Nikon may not have “stolen the crown” from Sony yet in terms of low-light autofocus with the Z5, but they’re getting close, and the Z5 builds on the Z6/Z7’s AF performance; it is NOT a step down! Reponse photo can unfortunately not be trusted to be objective. Otherwise, for stills Nikon F lenses work perfectly on a Z6/Z7/Z5/Z50. I wouldn’t count Canon out yet. The situation is still dangerous of course and cannot be treated lightly, but we are far away from the fear that has been circulating in the first half of 2020. All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 24.5 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 12Mb. The Z5 is part of Nikon’s full-frame Z-mount system, which gives you exceptional image quality and optical design in a compact build. I've noticed the phrase "camera for stills photography" cropped up recently with Canon. The Fuji probably has a better feature set, the cheaper sensor gives them more budget to spend on features, but the Nikon is full frame. BTW, on the argument not to buy entry-level cameras: I've often bought a camera at the lower end of an enthusiast/semi-pro range and invested my money in good glass. This Z5, come on, it's a travel back in time as for photography technology, If I wanted nostalgic retro technology, I could pick an A7m2 for a lot less money.---------------------------------I started with Nikon (V1, Df), then Sony (A7, A9, A7III), Canon (AL1, EOS 33V, EOS R), I used Fuji for a year, too. So if it seems to be a stop better than other APS-C cameras in high ISO, then wouldn't that get it in the neighborhood of a lot of full framers? Z5's 4.5 FPS is 2 FPS slower than my D7000 (10 year old camera) and too slow (for me), but I'd stump up for 8 FPS. I’ve used many brands and there are a lot of good cameras out there. It's absolutely no use for mid-ISO colour photography. Isn't Gold award a little bit too high for a camera that is so slow to focus? They weren’t expecting huge sales numbers. @ UncoyDP - the question was if you preferred adapted lenses and adaptors for your F-mount DSLR? RP! Fuji's strong painting of images works quite well for video, leaving a pleasing image with little effort. SIDE NOTE: I actually had to reach for the Sony a9 II, the current reigning champion of all mirrorless autofocus, (a $4,500 camera, mind you) …in order to find a comparison scenario where the Z5 started to noticeably “lose the battle”. I don't think we will see many nationwide lockdowns, it would cause way too much pressure on the economy. However, cameras using more modern (dual-gain BSI) sensors, like the Z6 and a7 III, show slightly less noise at very high ISOs in shadow regions. In our full review, coming soon, we’ll compare this new $1,400 Nikon FX mirrorless camera against the Sony and Canon full-frame competition, too, and dive deeper into other key aspects of the Nikon Z5. The best cameras for under $1000 should have good ergonomics and controls, great image quality and be capture high-quality video. Fuji has nicely sized lenses but a lot of old formulas with slow autofocus, they need to update their glass but with beasts like the 16-55 f/2.8 or 50 f/1 you may as well go full frame. When I found myself not noticing a difference between a Z6 (with the latest firmware) …and then contemplating, “I wonder how the Z5 compares against the Sony a9 II?” …I knew Nikon had done something right! In a year when social distancing became a way of life overnight, Senior Editor Barney Britton maintained a small sense of connection via the Fujifilm X100V. The a7II will not offer the same allround capabilities as a Z5, not even close. Or you can pay $100 more to get a gray market Z6, over the (gray) Z5. B&H | Adorama | Amazon. I'm thinking here of Sony and third-party f1.8 & f1.4 primes. The Z6 was from August, 2018 and it wasn’t quite state of the art when announced. Here’s a selection of prices. The D780 is being lauded for having the best Nikon DSLR video quality ever. Nikon has got everything right except the marketing. I can't think of any less 'fake' of a way to determine ISO reading. I don't want APS-C and don't want fake medium format either. The Sony has double the resolution, better low light performance and uncropped 4K available. Once you see it, it's almost impossible to unsee it. Thanks for making my point! We immediately compared it to the Z6, and to get straight to the point, we were impressed by what we found! all hail Sony; c.) entry-level anything is a bad purchasing choice; d.) camera "enthusiasts" would know precisely how to make better marketing and design engineering decisions using someone else's money. That's why reviewers here and elsewhere spend so much time talking about the video performance of mirrorless cameras. We photo geeks love our acronyms, so how 'bout some new ones standing for "stills-oriented" or "video-oriented" camera engineering emphasis? these are different size sensor. I'm using my FTZ for Sigma 14/1.8, and the PF glass. The Nikon Z5 is available as a body only for just under $1,400. An 89 is a B plus. They may be having a second wave, but overall the Euros are so, so much better equipped to handle it than our "Democrat hoax" touting "stable genius" over here in the good ole' US of A.. it's a safe bet that they will be far less badly effected by it than us "Were #1!" BSI has been shown to make little difference in FF sizes. Compare the subtle gradations of skin tone on the Canon shots at ISO 400 and 800, vs the watercolour effect on the Fuji image. Thanks! Because in Europe, by and large, (and yes, I've been there-twice) they take care of their people, not just their stock market and Corporations. Sony a7rII is an old piece of technology, with single card slot, worse EVF, no touch menu controls, really bad colors, poor battery life, and not so great AF. Either way, the value is obvious- no other full-frame camera has debuted at a price this low, and offered this many features. If you think the skin in those photos looks okay, you are a great customer for Fujifilm camera. That's a surprise as the 16-50mm DX Z lens (Z50 kit) is a world beater, best kit lens I've ever shot outperforming even the very good Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 and much smaller. The EVF is very grainy in dark conditions , at least on mine. Nikon's 35mm mirrorless are amazing affordable cameras. With c19 and g2's on the way, I'm hoping they can get some revenue but I don't have so much hope in this dreadful time. Still weather sealed the same. The A7R II's 45 MP will certainly be better for landscapes, or other applications where more resolution matter, but the Z5 image quality is nearly indiscernible to the Z 6, A 7III, etc. Nikon Z5, TechArt FE-Z Adapter, Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 | 1/2500 sec, f/6.3, ISO 400. Can't the Z5 shoot 1080p just fine, and doesn't it spit out HDMI to an external recorder if you need it? Don't newcomers to ilc photography want to be able to take great video? Everything else about it is great, or even more desirable, such as the dual SD card slots instead of a single XQD card slot. Although the Nikon Z5 is aimed to be a lower-tier camera than the Z6, its image sensor, ergonomics, and the menu system are very similar to those of its bigger brother. Enjoy the new comments above. Please be nice as I only posted here to inform anyone that might be considering a Z5 purchase to do a little more research and maybe even do the 30 day Nikon trial if you are. True, but aiming for a full frame sensor this time around. The 50mm 1.8s I picked up is as advertised and worth every penny, but the price/size of the remaining lenses leaves me on the fence of whether to keep the Z5. The possibility to shot 4K full frame is important, ultra wide angle lenses are very often used in video. Don't talk about something you never tried. Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera Image Quality: In terms of image quality, I think the Nikon Z5 produces fantastic images. sorry, mistyping, I had understood a7rII which is why I mentioned its credentials as a landscape camera. The EVF is so bad it’s useless for manual focus in astrophotography. Wow, this mantra of "adapted lenses are bad" is tedious. Slow focus? It’s been 2 years since the Z6/7, and I would have preferred a higher res sensor in the 6ii for a few hundred more. Anyone who caries around a camera and doesn't want to carry a flash gun just to get some occasional fill flash. It's fake high ISO with false numbers (tested it personally with studio lights) and hyperactive noise reduction. And sold all my Fuji gear. But with the Z6 you'd have to spend a lot extra on an XQD memory card, whereas the Z5 will take much cheaper SD cards, > with the Z6 you'd have to spend a lot extra on an XQD memory card. But many F-mount lenses are also very good. I also bought the camera after this review. Nikon will surely go out of business; b.) Switching focus modes, turning the camera on and off will solve focus issues eventually but I can't imagine having a client or a difficult subject in front of me, trying to deal with these failures. A pity Fujifilm chose APS-C (and mini-large format): the retro ergonomics are wonderfully zen. All of them will produce wonderful files. A colour photographer would be much better off with a Nikon full frame 35mm camera than anything else on the market. What makes you say that? But lens lineup is considerably more $$$ than Sony counterparts. Autofocus is sure and swift, and Nikon built some very impressive low-light capabilities into their entry-level full frame camera. It all comes down to two things–the video crop, of course, but also something that traditional photographers may find a bit frustrating: something called viewfinder blackout. Sounds like you haven't tried a Z camera since the 3.0 firmware update, or you haven't tried a Z camera at all and are just repeating what you hear from others that have never shot a Z camera... The bottom line is that if you want a good, solid full-frame camera that is more affordable than the Z5, you’ll have to try your luck with the well-used bargain bin of older DSLRs. Nothing the Z5 doesn't do better except all the cases when you need autofocus... :-). If only Ttamron was making these great Di3 lenses for Nikon... huh? But saying the A7ii is good value is a joke. A7II is its direct competitor with a capable but dated sensor tech and AF. They are crap! I understand that it's quite a bit more expensive than the Z5. It's not 2003 anymore, when you could take a BIG hammer, cripple a camera here and there (like 300D), and still it became a best seller. Sensor technology: BSI (Z6) versus FSI (Z5) Max Image Size: 6048 x 4024 (Z6) versus 6016 x 4016 (Z5) Its a good approach. I would far more trust Nikon's stabilization, build quality, menu system and ergos. The A7R II was from September, 2015 and state of the art when launched, so wouldn’t call it a relic - compared to a Z5. If you must buy Nikon, then get the Z6 or Z6II. The D3x came out in 2008. Nikon use a BSI sensor in the better Z6. The Z6 is much better than the Z5, IMHO the Z5 does not deserve the DPR Gold award. Our verdict: the Nikon Z5 achieves par for the course in terms of full-frame image quality, despite being by far the most affordable Nikon FX body ever made. Now this is the '2020 "EOS 6D"! It's called long term vision. On a few rare occasions, the price has dropped even lower. Would it perform great with these Dslr lenses? I feel some cognitive dissonance when I see a Gold Award camera receiving 89 points. The Z5 was launched recently in 2020, but it is a lower spec Z6 with dual card SD slots. On price, the Z5 will of course go down in the coming months as all cameras do. Our Verdict. When Nikon first switched from their legendary 3D focus tracking in the DSLR realm to the mirrorless Z-mount with autofocus being done on the image sensor, “Focus Tracking” was a little frustrating to work with: you had to hit the OK button on the rear of the camera to activate and de-activate it. I am an EVF user and it is great on an Z6. This is how the Sony Real-Time Tracking system works, by the way, and Nikon’s Focus Tracking works almost as good in decent light, though it gets a bit less reliable in “terrible” light. Just picked this up with a 24-50. Well, the Z5 changes this; now, half-pressing the shutter release or AF-ON button works the optimal way- Focus Tracking starts and stops, and resets, as it should. I have thousands of mid ISO color photographs from my various Fuji cameras, and "useless" is the last thing that comes to mind. I like it! Still, the D750 is a good starting point for image quality. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture. I also maintain that DPR has been slightly too uncritical of the Z5s unbalanced feature set for the price, Since nobody will be using 4K on this camera, the IBIS is also rendered largely superfluous. The Z5 is very well-built, both in terms of its physical ruggedness, and the ergonomics & customization. Video is certainly an important element in mirrorless cameras. An 'entry level' FF with dual card slots at that price? It’s the low-light autofocus reliability that we need to really scrutinize! (Well, I metered off a white wall, which should be white, but I let the camera’s metering make it grey; it’s not the camera’s fault! @johnami We talk about specialized cameras stores, online or no, which sell it at 1900€On PhotoCineComedie, it has a little 100€ promotion, but that's all. Canon RP is currently the cheapest, but then IQ is compromised with limited DR. You think this is Nikon D70 from which was launched over a decade ago? A great mirrorless video camera from Nikon? By comparison, Canon’s EOS RP was just $100 cheaper than the Z5, at an MSRP of ~$1,300 originally, but in order to achieve that price point, Canon decided to go with just one SD memory card slot, a low-capacity “compact camera” battery, and no in-body stabilization. Toilet Roll's gear is stated as Fujifilm and Canon. You talk like you’re comparing marketing strategies and not camera systems. It is absolutely no problem to make tiny, lightweight glass for that mount. But that wasn't and isn't Nikons strategy, in a declining market where many fight the battle who dies first Nikon decided to focus on the high end market where they have less competition, bigger margins, better brand image. When the Z6 and Z7 came out they were the best mirrorless still cameras on the market and arguably still are, and to deliver the demand for high end glass, to build a reputation of being the best, well for that Nikon designed big, expensive lenses and they do sell. Not even the R had two SD or a CFE/XQD (~same reliability) and cost more than Z6!I want it to be bashed as badly as the Z6/Z7 :). Raw image quality from the Z5's 24MP sensor shows excellent detail$(document).ready(function() { $("#icl-5206--1268558559").click(function() { ImageComparisonWidgetLink(5206); }); }) at base ISO, on par with its peers. The Nikon Z 5, priced at $1,400 or $1,700 with a kit lens, mixes the size, ergonomics, stabilization, and even most of the image quality of the company’s pricier Z 6. Also, it is not "the best value stills-oriented full-framer" camera out there, that honor currently belongs to the 42 megapixel BSI-sensor Sony A7R II, currently on sale for $1,298 (price range in 2020 has been from $1,298 to $1,798). It is a boring camera. I thought Nikon was prioritizing bringing their cameras' video tech up to date. Where the S glass is needed is for video, as it's silent to focus and very smooth switching focus areas. (Well, you can’t “feel” the dual SD slots, but you know they’re there, giving you more peace of mind than any other camera in its price range!). You can still upgrade to premium anytime. There are some exceptions but overall that’s the case. The Primoplan 75mm F1.9 II is a redesign of the original Primoplan 75mm F1.9 designed in 1936. Add a credit card now and it will be charged for an Annual Premium Membership ($499) at the end of your trial. The Nikon Z5 can be seen almost a hybrid of the Z50 and Z6. First, the Z5 has quite a bit of image blackout when taking a picture, so if you want to “spray and pray” at the relatively modest 4.5 FPS, (the Z6 has 12 FPS, by comparison) …you’ll struggle to track very fast subjects in the viewfinder or on the rear LCD. That's the first step towards your recovery. You had to hit the OK button again to stop focus tracking. Once more in all caps - the FTZ ADAPTER IS AWESOME. I use my 300PF and 500PF on my Z6 frequently and have no issues. Not exactly a hot topic in DSLRs. Here is a quote from the review... (Part 2) "The Z5 offers solid autofocus performance whether using traditional subject tracking, face/eye detect, or simply a single AF point/area. It's a marketing decision. Planning to treat yourself to a new full-frame camera this holiday season? Enter your username or email address to receive a link to set your password. (For you camera geeks, this also means the Z5 sensor is ISO-invariant, at least at these few highest ISOs. I love my RP! Take a look. The Nikon Z5 is capable of excellent image quality whether shooting Raw or JPEG. Guys, on page 2 (What's new and how it compares) you should correct the A7III Flash X sync speed speed from 1/200 sec to 1/250 sec. But, when I buy a wine listed as a good value in Wine Spectator, I look for those that score at least 90 with a price tag under $25. And we've been busy enjoying the last licks of summer with it by our side. Smart of Nikon to use the same body for three cameras. *Ground-breaking autofocus with third-party lenses. If Nikon could afford to leave the IBIS in the Z5 then they could have afforded to leave uncropped 4K. The rear camera (or cameras) on an iPhone has all the latest bells and whistles, but how do you use them to capture a selfie or record a video of yourself? It is indeed essentially a pro body - but the sensor is effectively the one from the D600, and I think that is a bigger issue than the review lets on, \\ but the sensor is effectively the one from the D600\\. The Nikon Z5 might just be the most exciting entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera ever, considering that it costs just about $1,400 and yet competes with other cameras costing ~$2,000 or more! From DPR's review it looks like the Z5 does exactly that. I don't see the Z5 as the best value. Hmm this review makes me want to quit canon and go to the "darkside". …until you try to shoot really fast action sequences or wide-angle video. Seems like a great solid and relatively decent priced photo camera. Canon cannot even fill sales orders. > This insanity has to stop. You can see some slight differences in color between this current generation of Nikon mirrorless cameras and the D750-generation: reds and yellows both look a tad punchier. I would save for the Z6II. Sony lenses are much more expensive than Nikon lenses. Gee four or five years ago, adapting EF glass to Sony was the Renaissance because that meant full frame Sony had full frame and more lenses than anyone. The app includes automatic image transfer, gallery creation, editing tools and more. The 'One Shot' documentary highlights the incredible amount of preparation and work involved in photographers capturing iconic moments in Olympic history. except IBIS everything for much less, at least here, and it is not incl adapters) for. It's quality is better in Super-35 cropped 4k, but then you're back to the Z5 crop, more or less, and the Z5's autofocus is much better. Done. Having said that, note that we were specifically referring to PHOTOGRAPHERS just now. ), [Related Reading: Nikon Z7 Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Review]. However, some areas in the Jpegs look slightly diffused and a little smoother than I’d like. The answer comes from studying its rivals. In this era of people buying new cell phones every year with new tricks, it seems so much more is expected in new devices, and cameras are now tech devices. Upon relating his negative experience with third party adapters and Sony bodies, it sounds like Uncoy did answer that question. The Z lenses are clearly not any more slow focusing than their Sony or Canon counterparts. Reasons to prefer the Nikon Z5: More detail: Has more megapixels (24.2 vs 20.7MP), which boosts linear resolution by 8%. The $50 FTZ adapters are so existing Nikon users can use their F-mount lenses to fill in the gaps in the Z lens lineup. These successful results are great news for any Nikon mirrorless camera, let alone one that costs just $1,400! Sure the number of cases rises, but the number of deaths and the number of people in intensive care is still rather low. Is it too good to be true, though? You can still get great quality 1080p with the Z5 by the way. What's not to like? Of course I know the Z6 exists. In addition, hygenic practices have been increased everywhere, people do wear masks in highly frequented places. They have insane lenses at more than the cost of a camera, but I far prefer the Z-mount approach of top tier standard lenses and zoom. I felt like I was using my X-Pro 1. But that desire may go away in a few days with the Z6II that looks like it’s going to close most of the AF gap. Awards and scores are relative to the category the camera is in. NexLupus, their own DPReview TV made a video on that Firmware 3.0, and stated that its AF is still mediocre at best, as pretty much all other youtubers say, as people that I know personally say. Evidently he is a sociopath who has no life outside these forums. Technical Editor Richard Butler's pick was the unusual lens that gave him the opportunity to try something new. I just didn't think Nikon would cut back on the lower priced camera's video. My gear is cheaper, except the oldies 5D, A7 back into their heydays. Everything else has been a great experience so far! The Nikon Z5 uses pretty much the same external body design as the Z6/Z7, with a couple of small, but key, differences. Canon users are ranting, rightfully so, about the R5/R6, but canon has been far behind in DR for a decade. How did Nikon make such an affordable full-frame camera, one that at a glance seems not make any compromises in terms of physical quality, nor image quality? I think the Fujifilm XT3 is a wonderful camera, but your need to dis other brands shows a need to justify your camera. (We can’t wait for next year when the Nikkor Z 200-600mm comes out!). I haven't tested it myself, yes, because, well, I'm not very interested in that particular experience. Except for the D780 which people say is good because Nikon borrowed its video from the Z6. Nikon's entry-level Z-mount full-framer is proving to be a fun and capable companion for everyday stills photography. I loved the ergonomics of the X-H1 before I moved over to Nikon but Fuji X-Trans 26 MP sensor only holds up for BW photography. It has great handling, good shooting speeds and autofocus, nice image quality … The thing though is that there are few, if any, FE lens I’d rather have than it’s Nikon Z mount counterpart. The D750 has an internal flash and a top deck display. Have to save a few months to get the 24-70 F4. Check the fireman. It could be a bad batch of cameras or it just is what it is. * Subject tracking in video is poor, while the complete auto 'Wide' mode is prone to jump to the background or between subjects in complex scenes. You can shoot stills in Eterna. Raw files provide impressive detail capture and good noise performance. As we continue to test Nikon's update of its multimedia full-framer, we've added more of our findings so far on image quality, dynamic range and video quality. 273-point* 1 AF system offering accurate focus across 90% of the frame both horizontally and vertically while allowing touch AF during live view. I was already shooting Eterna most of the time, always for video. Do the results look a little off to you at the higher ISOs? Not sure about the Z5, I think it’s 200.000. Nikon opted to use their conventional CMOS sensor with this camera, rather than implementing the Backside Illumination (BSI) structure found in the higher-end Z6. Its not good at all. At this point, I would rather get the D780. Alright, here’s what everybody has been concerned about: when the Z5 was announced, sharp-eyed photographers noticed that the 24-megapixel sensor was not “BSI”, that is, it’s not Back-Side Illuminated. So, can you imagine a $1,200 Z5, or even a $1,100 one? Basically, what happens is, the Z5 blacks out the viewfinder (and live view) when you take a picture, no matter how you configure the shutter and the live image preview or playback. There have to be differences. You can see every blemish on the fireman's skin; every subtle shadow gradation if you look for it, looks pretty clear and sharp to me. We are in fact, number one-in transmission rates, hospitalization rates, death rates. Otherwise I probably would have been very satisfied with a Z5 as a mainly stills photographer. The same AF sensors are used, while that’s not the case for D780 and 5DIV both of which have excellent OSPDAF. zephyrion974They gave it a Gold for it's stills use not video. Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images. Oh yeah, it's EVF and back LCD weren't so great either...and it has no touch menu controls. Okay I admit the RP has a shutter button but to pay still that much for it? The D750 and Z5 have similar sensors, which are conventional FSI 24MP EXMOR sensors. After reading the review here I thought I was making a good decision in purchasing the camera. Hoping for the best for nikon. The viewfinder is also a major disappointment on my Z5. There is ZERO in common with third party adapters. If you look at our ISO Invariance test, you can see that using a low ISO in low light conditions and brightening it, leaves little meaningful difference in the outcome compared to using a high ISO in the first place. But remember, a used Eos R/5D Mark 4 today still more expensive than the Z5 body only. In the $1300 gray / $1.400 US price range of the Z5, Sony only offers the A7R II ($1.300), which isn't bad, at all. Now you can adapt that mature E mount lens catalog to Nikon Z and it even works pretty well (give Techart some time and firmware updates, it will work better still) so there's that. Z 5 is powered by Nikon’s fast, comprehensive Expeed 6 image processing system. This gave some folks reason to fear that high ISO image quality would not be as impressive as the Nikon Z6 and Nikon D780, which have set a very high bar that roughly matches even the Sony A7 III and Sony a9 II. my gran used to say: If you've nothing worth saying, say nothing. Are you still in the dream of R5 and sony alpha camera. Also, this crop for video means that the over-sampled 4K video from the Z6 will appear much sharper and finely detailed, unfortunately. Health care is much better. And yes, the R/5D Mark Iv was launched years back and some say the comparison is kinda irrelevant. As an alternate comparison, Sony’s just-announced new A7C is more compact, (22% lighter than the already rather lightweight A7 III) however, the A7C’s design is a compromise that makes the camera operate more like the beginner-oriented Sony A6x00 series, not the advanced, full-featured Sony A7 series. Pinpoint fails consistently, the others fail inconsistently. Nikon sells the body cheap, so they can get people to buy the super expensive Z lenes. There little data about the Expeed 6, but my guess is the Bionz X is competitive since it’s also used in the A7 III and A7R III. Visit mapcamera and see how many RF top lenses are available second hand. @ bernardlang the Z5 is not destined to be a guaranteed success, dual card slots or not - this is not a professional level camera and as such is fairly expensive. The 1M dot screens are used on lots of Nikons and more than capable. Eye detection autofocus is not very reactive and the rear tilting screen not very lisable in strong light especially at different angles. But the sensor's dynamic range is excellent as is image quality. They give it 3 stars out of 5, not quite gold. They don't really understand why a FF sensor camera is marketed with such a poor zoom lens.Helps to read various reviews to have a good vision of a product, especially if physical photographic shops are lacking. (HINT: Want to know what actually does set the Z6 apart from the Z5? (Rolls eyes). You can pick and choose all you want, but the takeaway is that the lenses are close in price across the board. Depending on what lenses you need, you might match or beat the Z5 kit's value proposition with a more expensive body from another maker that has more price-competitive lens options. The Z5 delivers insanely good value. I have the Z6+24-70 f4 and it is very sharp. Nikon, Sony, Canon, Panasonic and Fuji are probably here to stay. ... In-Camera Image Stabilization. "Thoughts" is paid to post pro-Canon and anti-Sony propaganda. Bernardlang you say the R5/6 are not selling well, but are on a huge backorder list due to the huge increase of sales. The AF-S Nikon F-mount lenses that I had were only usable in AF-S mode, and were nowhere near fast enough for AF-C or AF-F in video mode. Combining a 37MP full-frame sensor, minimalist controls and Lightroom Mobile built in, it's a refreshing – if a bit quirky – take on the smartphone-meets-camera concept. Blame physics. It's a niche (and pricey) product to be sure, but so far we find it to be well-designed and capable of outstanding results. The lenses which you intend to use as main lenses for video should be native ones. Oleg,"their own DPReview TV made a video on that Firmware 3.0, and stated that its AF is still mediocre at best[...]". @Mr Bolton There does seem to be some kind of mob at work here who are deliberately misunderstanding very clear text. I shoot both S glass and F glass on my Z6. Yes, all that was true 6 years ago. It’s a whole different thing, however, to figure out how to actually CONTROL the focus points, namely not just how you move the AF point around the viewfinder, but, how do you instruct the AF system to begin tracking a subject around the viewfinder, to follow its every move, and then stop tracking, at will? only, a dim-lit, small PentaMirror OVF, instead of a bright Pentaprism one, no decent Al-mg Body build Quality, no Top Shoulder Display, etc. I originally thought about getting a prime for doing portrait shoots, but then I just took this lens in the 50-70 range and the results are always incredibly good. Again, not bagging on Canon colors or rendering here-but you can make Fuji colors look almost any way you want between the film sims themselves, tweaking their parameters in the Q menu, or the raws. Sadly the reverse is not true. The ergonomics of the Sony a7RII are also pretty bad, worse than the models that came later as Sony tweaked stuff to respond to criticism. I have not had any autofocus issues with my A7R II on firmware 4.01. I just did something sneaky, to try and make both cameras look, well, as BAD as possible. If you can live with XQD, Z6 is absolutely the best value, it has the same sensor as the mighty A7m3.When the Z6 came out I had a look, I loved it, and if it were not that stupid XQD, I would have bought one. The Z5’s body design and layout is similar to the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 models, but it comes with a tiny 24-50mm kit lens that can be retracted when not in … I agree with mkowalski. I was not happy. Sigma has introduced its new 'I series' of compact, premium full-frame lenses for E and L mounts. I don't think that RP is tempting enough for modern buyers. Chris and Jordan take a look at the new Sigma 35mm F2 and 65mm F2. We compare the Canon EOS R6, Nikon Z6 II, Panasonic S5 and Sony a7 III. Perhaps you should comment on what the person actually wrote, instead of what you think they might of said ? So why is Technical Editor Richard Butler feeling so much more positive about the new camera than he was about its APS-C sibling? FujifilmXT3Not that good? Doesn't affect stills ability. So, read on and stay tuned! You can see in my gear list what I had. In fact I saw 'better', was more creative and thoughtful and learnt far more with entry level kit...and anyway, NOTHING about this cam is entry level if you were started with film in a manual rangefinder. Things like Eye AF have been as much of a revolution as perhaps autofocus itself when it first came. It's interesting that we are getting feedback from the forums now about Z5 AF. Depending on which system you're in and what your needs are, they might just be the compact, well-priced and impressively sharp little primes you've been looking for. And it is far, far cheaper than the D780. It benefits from a large image sensor, high resolution images, and a great autofocusing system.
